In-home natural light studio session
You can have a studio style portrait session right in your own home, utilising natural light or my small professional studio light set-up. I prefer to work with the beauty and softness that natural light brings. A natural light studio session is perfect for any aspect of portraiture and works wonderfully for newborns, babies, young children and families. A studio light set-up is great for a more classic style of image, such as a family group or professional headshot. I have my mobile set up with differing backdrops, and I have various gorgeous posing props to use with newborns, babies and young children. I like to take my time with this classic style of session. Studio images will always be a timeless addition to your home.
In-home candid session
Sometimes there’s nothing like being at home to catch your family really being themselves. Kids and adults alike are most relaxed in their own environment and this can make for beautiful photographs. Great home photography also requires good natural light, so if you would like to book a home session, consider the amount of natural light from windows and doors that’s available. If your home is quite dark, maybe an outdoors location would be a better choice. Of course, there’s always your very own backyard as an option!
Outdoor location session
An outdoor session also makes for great portraits. Your session can take place in the outdoor location of your choice, such as the beach or your favourite park. Another great idea is to step out of the norm and to photograph somewhere different – a run down farm or the dirt track behind your house. They add an extra element to your images that can make them more than your average family portrait. The best time for an outdoor session is early to mid-morning and late afternoon to early evening. These are the times when the light is best, as the middle of the day sun is too harsh and will cast strong shadows. A shaded area is also preferable and several desirable beach locations can be suggested. There is no time limit on any of my portrait sessions. I will keep snapping away as long as everyone is happy!
Clothing for children and family sessions
Have your child/ren rested before the session. Pick a time of the day that best suits your child's mood - morning tends to suit newborns and younger babies. For location shoots, bring something for your child to eat or drink. A favourite toy can calm an upset child. Newborns photograph best in the ‘buff‘ and I always allow plenty of time for feeding and settling, so your little one is comfy and sound asleep. Choose simple, bright coloured clothing for babies and older children. A beautiful dress is perfect on a little girl, as is a smart button-up shirt and pants/dress shorts on a little boy. Please try to avoid logos, characters, or writing on clothing - they tend to become outdated and detract from your images. Bring a couple of changes of clothes or a favourite dress/outfit for your child. A hairbrush and face wipes are also a good idea.
The simpler the better for family group photos ~ clothing in colours that compliment each other work well. A pair of blue jeans and a white top is a good choice, especially when the whole family wears them. Clothing suggestions will be discussed upon booking your custom portrait session to ensure that you are comfortable, happy and have ideas about how to look great together and compliment one another. Most of all, remember to ...have fun!
